Summer months can get quite hot and the temperatures inside the house rise just as much. However, with air-conditioning and fans, the indoors can be made cozy and cool. Sometimes the air-conditioning gets a bit too much for kids and then they need their Snuggly Blankets to balance it. Just because it’s summer doesn’t mean you should ignore that it might get too cold for your kids. Especially at night, it can get quite cold so to make sure your kids have the right things to keep warm in case it gets colder such is snuggly blankets, socks, or sweaters.
Now even though the summer nights can get cool, the daytime can be quite hot and depending on the city you are, it can feel almost unsurvivable during some summer months. Below are ways that you can make sure you and your kids keep cool during the summer days. Other parents use snuggly blankets as a small shade maker to ensure the baby skin stays just that.
Cotton Sheets vs. Snuggly Blankets
Silk and polyester sheets are better during the colder months. In the summer, the use cotton sheets are better. A suggestion would be to get light colored bed linens made of cotton. They are breathable and promote ventilation and airflow. If it’s really hot and you don’t have air conditioning, one tip is to put your sheets in the fridge or freezer for some minutes before bedtime. Snuggly blankets tend to be more for cooler and colder months or if your baby sleeps with the window open.
Cool Your Sheets
Make sure you put them in a plastic bag before putting them in the freezer. The sheets will cool down and will make your hot evening a lot cooler. It kinda works like when restaurant warms up plates before serving food to keep the food warmer for longer. You can also get a bed friendly ice-pack to keep the bed cool.
Point you fans towards the window to push hot air out and adjust the blades to turn counterclockwise. You can also place a box or bowl of ice in front of a fan and soon it’ll start blowing cold air around the room. You can also keep many fans to get a cross breeze action going on. Many fans will make the air in the room cooler and will lead to air flowing everywhere. This will pull hot air out of the room instead of re-distributing it out. If it is extreme heat and you have no other options, you can soak a sheet or towel in water and lay it on a dry sheet. Many people don’t like to sleep on wet sheets and that’s understandable. Do this if it is in extreme conditions. It is called the Egyptian method. You can also hand a wet sheet by the window and this will cool the air that’s coming into the room.
Sleep in Light/Loose Clothing
During summer nights, less is more when it comes to dressing for bed. Pick loose clothing like light cotton shirts, singlets, and underwear. Some people prefer to sleep naked and some say sleeping naked actually makes you hotter because the clothes apparently absorb sweat that is otherwise left on your body when naked.
Sleep on the Floor
When temperatures soar, trade in that extra-comfy mattress for a minimalist straw or bamboo mat. These all-natural sleeping surfaces are less comfortable, but they don’t retain heat like a puffy, cloth-covered mattress.
Depending on where you are you can sleep outside on particularly not nights. You can set up a hammock and relive your camping days. Or you can set up a sleeping camp on the balcony or porch. This depends on where you are. Also, if you have a high bed, you can move it to the floor. Hot air rises and so the closer you are to the floor the cooler it will be. Got access to a safe outdoor space like a roof, courtyard, or backyard? Practice those camping skills (and stay cooler) by pitching a tent and sleeping outside.
You should drink lots of water during the day to stay hydrated and also at night. Drink a good and sufficient amount of water before bed. Many experts recommend drinking 8 ounces of water a day.
Take a Cold Shower
This seems self-evident but some people might forget. A cold shower just before bed will keep you cool and cool down your core body temperature and will leave you feeling cool and refreshed.
Turn off the Light
Leaving on lightbulbs will lead to more heat is light bulbs generate heat. This is true for all light bulbs including environmental friendly or energy saving bulbs. Use lights minimally and your room will be cooler.
Make Room Temperature Dishes
When it is particularly hot and you don’t have air conditioning, then it is not the time to start roasting something in the oven. Prepare dishes like salads that don’t make lots of heat. If you must, then you can use the grill outside. When you eat large meals, the body makes more heat trying to digest it. Make smaller meals and eat vegetables and fruits.
Cool Your Feet
Dip your feet in the water and it will cool the whole body. Do this when you’re hot and before bed (If you can’t take a cool shower).
Keep Electronics Off
Electronic devices produce heat to keep them off or in a different room from your bedroom. Reduce total heat in the house (and save energy!) by keeping plugs out of sockets when the appliances are not in use.
